Design your sign

A carved hardwood sign, about 30 inches across. One line of lettering, with an optional ornament on either side or both. Answer the questions on the left and it is drawn to size on the right, with anything we would want to tell you about it beside the thing it concerns.

Step 1 Where will this sign live?

We ask this first because it decides which woods will last. It is easier to hear now than after you have designed the sign.

Inside a house or a shop. Anything we make will last.

A porch, a soffit, under an eave — out of direct rain and sun, but not heated.

Direct sun and rain. This is the hardest place to put anything wooden, and it rules some woods out.

Step 2 Which wood?

Answer step 1 and the woods that suit that spot appear here.

Step 3 How big?
Step 4 Left ornament
Step 5 Name

Pick a wood in step 2 first — what can be carved depends on it.

Unfilled means the carving is left bare — the shadow in the groove gives the contrast. It costs less, and it never has a colour that fights the wood.

Step 6 Right ornament
Step 7 How will you hang it?

We'll finish the back flat and leave the fixing to you.
